Moruba, also known as Maruba, is an ancient strategy board game rooted in African tradition, typically played with stones, pebbles, or marbles either on a designated board or directly on the ground. The game holds particular cultural significance among the Bapedi tribe in South Africa's Limpopo province, especially in North Sotho-speaking regions, as well as in Mpumalanga within the former Transvaal. Over time, the game has extended beyond its traditional locales, largely through mine workers who introduced it to Gauteng.
The standard boards used for Moruba generally feature two or four rows containing six or twelve holes respectively. Players distribute stones evenly across these holes, often placing four to six stones per hole at the start, with the initial configuration being empty. Today, electronic versions of Moruba are available, enabling players worldwide to engage with opponents remotely. Online gameplay begins most conveniently by inviting a friend to join.
The primary objective of the game is to accumulate more stones—commonly referred to as “cows”—within one's “crawl,” which is the player's designated store area. Victory is achieved when an opponent exhausts all their stones. In a betting context, these stones can symbolize currency or lives, adding a strategic layer to the play.
Each player—whether individual or team—controls only their side of the play area or “board.” On their turn, a player selects a hole from their side and distributes its contents one by one into subsequent holes in a counter-clockwise direction on their own side.
If the last stone placed lands in an empty hole within the inner row, and the opponent’s adjacent outer hole contains stones, these “enemy stones” are captured and moved into the player's crawl. Additionally, each time a player passes by their crawl—an area designated for storing captured stones—they bank one stone. If the last stone ends in a player's crawl, they earn an extra turn.
Furthermore, if the final stone is placed into an empty hole within the inner row and the directly opposite hole on the opponent’s side contains stones, those opponent stones are captured along with any stones in the corresponding outer row hole aligned vertically. These captured stones are then transferred to the player's crawl.
